How to take measurements from a photo of a plan
Sometimes the plan only exists on paper — pinned to a site notice board, in a house-viewing brochure, or rolled up in someone's office. A phone photo can absolutely be measured from, if you shoot it right and know the limits. Here's how.
Why photos are the hard case
A native PDF or a flatbed scan is geometrically clean: every part of the drawing is at the same scale. A photo adds two distortions. Perspective (keystone): if the camera isn't perfectly square-on, one side of the page is closer than the other, so one end of the drawing measures bigger. Lens distortion: phone lenses — especially wide-angle ones — bend straight lines near the frame edges. Both mean the scale varies across the image, and one calibration can't be true everywhere.
You can't remove these afterwards with a measuring tool, so the fix happens when you take the photo.
Shooting a photo that measures well
- Get the paper flat. Unroll it, weight the corners. A curl in the page is a distortion no camera position can fix.
- Shoot square-on, from the centre. Hold the phone directly above (or in front of) the middle of the drawing, screen parallel to the paper. If your camera app has a level indicator or a document mode, use it.
- Step back and zoom slightly. Filling the frame edge-to-edge with a wide lens maximises distortion exactly where it's worst. Standing back a little and using 2× keeps the drawing in the low-distortion centre of the lens.
- Avoid raking light. Shadows and glare hide the linework you'll be clicking on. Diffuse, even light beats a flash.
- Prefer scan mode if you have it. Notes-app document scanners de-skew the page automatically and output a clean rectangle — nearly as good as a real scan.
Calibrating a photo
Upload the photo to Scale Rule like any other drawing (JPG and PNG are fine — the camera button in the app takes a photo directly on mobile). Then calibrate against a known dimension, exactly as for a PDF floor plan — with one extra habit:
Calibrate once, then verify in the other direction. Set the scale with a horizontal known dimension, then measure a vertical known dimension and compare. If the two disagree by more than a few percent, the photo has real perspective distortion — reshoot it squarer rather than trusting the numbers. Adding both lines as calibrations averages the error, and Scale Rule's spread warning tells you when they disagree enough to matter.
What accuracy to expect
- Scan or screenshot: essentially as good as a native PDF — calibration error dominates, typically ≪1–2%.
- Careful photo (flat, square-on, centred): usually within a few percent — fine for furniture fit, room comparisons, rough quantities.
- Casual photo (angled, wide lens, curled paper): errors of 5–10%+ towards the edges are normal. Good enough to compare rooms, not good enough to order flooring.
Whatever the source, photo measurements are estimates. Verify on site before any purchase or construction decision.

Is it better to scan the plan instead of photographing it?

Can I measure from a screenshot of a plan?
Yes — screenshots have no perspective distortion at all, so they calibrate cleanly. Take the screenshot at the highest zoom that fits the area you care about, since more pixels per metre means finer measurement resolution.
